Visit to YMCA

The YMCA sports and community Centre in Redhill is a fantastic venue in East Surrey. It has recently been extended to include an innovative inclusive sports facility allowing them to offer more disability sport and physical activities for people with disabilities and long-term ill-health.

Facilities include a state-of-the-art inclusive sports hall with 2 boccia courts and a viewing gallery; accessible toilets and changing facilities including showers; a new studio space for fitness classes, a fully refurbished and spacious gym with a wide variety of gym equipment including wheelchair friendly machines.

Activities:

Fitness classes are varied and include several gentler options, such as platinum yoga, paracise or walking football that are aimed at older people or those returning to exercise.

They are also part of the exercise referral scheme, in which GP’s, primary care and hospital staff can refer people with a chronic health condition or disability and those rehabilitating from an injury or illness for specific exercise sessions to support an independent, more active lifestyle. If you are not yet able or ready to return to the gym there are also online classes running for the foreseeable future.

Inclusive Sport Sessions:

The centre runs several groups specifically for young adults and adults with physical or learning disabilities. Current sessions include the hugely popular game of teamwork and skill, Boccia; fun and easy to follow routines with inclusive dance; inclusive football and disability badminton; as well as Lifeworks which are inclusive sporting and social activity days for young adults involving gardening, sports, art and daytrips.

The YMCA are always looking to introduce new things where there is demand and interest. Activities they are considering include self-defence classes, disability cricket, tai chi and an accessible Walk for Health.

Membership:

You can choose to become a member or pay-as-you-go for the sessions. Monthly membership gives you unlimited use of the gym facilities including a free induction, access to fitness classes and the ability to prebook classes on a new app.

Getting to the YMCA East Surrey:

The centre is situated on Princes Road, Redhill, RH1 1JJ. Although it is somewhat tucked away behind a housing estate it is easily accessible. For those that drive the car park has been extended and is free for centre users. The nearest bus stop is 300m from the centre on the 430 and 435 bus route from Redhill. Metro bus have also added an announcement “alight here for YMCA East Surrey” to aid passengers.

The nearest train station is Earlswood which is an 800m walk from the centre. If you have difficulty getting to the centre and are on the Exercise Referral Scheme then you can make use of the wheelchair accessible minibus service which, for a small fee, will collect you from home, take you to the centre and take you back home again.
