Attia, Outreach Officer for Surrey Coalition of Disabled People, tells us about her visit to a refugee lunch hosted by Woking Borough Council.

Woking Borough Council invite local refugees to lunch events to help them to settle into the local community. The lunch was well attended by about 60 refugees from different countries including Afghanistan, Syria and Ukraine.

I have been helping refugees to settle into local communities for about 4 years. During Ramadan, about 4 years ago somebody told me about a woman that had arrived from Syria after her husband and son had died during the war. She arrived in the country with her two daughters but was struggling to access food. I was able to get in touch with the woman and provide food for her family.

Since then, I have tried to help refugees as much as I can. My work at Surrey Coalition of Disabled People involves reaching out to other communities to help them access the support they need to be an active part of the community. Surrey Coalition of Disabled People Tech to Community Connect project helps people that are digitally excluded get connected. Many refugees struggle to access technology so part of my role is speaking to people to let them know about the help we can provide.

At the lunch event I gave a 10 minute presentation on Surrey Coalition of Disabled People. 6 other charities also presented at the event to tell them about the support they are able to offer too.

The information was well received, and I have since been contacted by a few people wanting to become a member of The Coalition or to find out more about the Tech to Community Connect project.

Attia’s will be attending other events over the coming weeks and months to continue to spread the word about the amazing work of Surrey Coalition of Disabled People.
