Last October, Coalition member Jane had a great time at Wheels for Wellbeing’s Croydon hub. Her blog about the day is attached for you to read again and it might just tempt you to join us for our next Get More Active Get Together at Alice Holt Inclusive Cycling. The Get Together is this Thursday the 30th June at 11am and it’s not too late to join us. Contact Katy by phone or SMS text on 07434 865062 or by email firstname.lastname@example.org
I used to enjoy cycling a lot when I was a child. When I was 10, before I was diagnosed, I actually rode my bike into the back of a car because my parents didn’t realise I couldn’t see very well! I haven’t been on a bike for a long time though, so I wanted to give it a try again. I found out there were cycling sessions in Croydon from the Get More Active project at Surrey Coalition.
We had to register with Wheels for Wellbeing before we could book a session. Unfortunately, the forms weren’t very accessible which is a bug bear of mine and a real shame in this day and age, so Katy helped me complete the forms online which we did a few weeks before we went.
On October 12th I met with Katy at East Croydon station, and we caught the tram to Croydon Arena which was a short walk from the Arena tram stop. I gave Katy some tips on being a guide as it was her first time guiding someone who is visually impaired.
We were greeted at the Arena by the Wheels for Wellbeing team and paid our money. It is £5 for a 45-minute session with supporters going free. The people were really helpful and friendly, and we were then given our tandem. Katy was given instructions on how to steer the tandem which was a side by side tandem. We went round the track which was enormous and in the middle it had a water jump for when people do steeplechase. We chatted while we cycled round the track and enjoyed the sunshine – we were lucky it was a nice warm day! We stopped for a bit while Katy took some photos which are shown below.
It was a very enjoyable morning and made me feel well and ready for the rest of the week. The best part was being able to go with someone else and having a companion otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to go on my own. I’m looking forward to our next visit!
