In August 2023, the National Trust invited The Coalition’s Access All Areas project to feedback on a sensory walk – which is currently in development – at Hindhead Commons and the Devil’s Punch Bowl.
Sensory walks encourage people to use all their senses (sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch) to connect with their surroundings while walking. Sensory walks are a way to relax, keep fit and get in touch with nature, as well as shown to improve mental health. DeafBlindUK writes: “Lots of people use sensory walks to practice mindfulness. Mindfulness is all about being aware of your own thoughts, feelings and the world around you. Sensory walks are an easy way to try mindfulness, because they encourage you to slow down and be in tune with your surroundings.” (Source: How to go on a sensory walk | Deafblind UK)
The Coalition – represented by Jonathan, Yasmin, Angie T., Alex, Angie and Gary – highlighted what accessibility improvements could be made to the sensory walk, and to other areas at Hindhead Commons and the Devil’s Punch Bowl as well.
