The Riding for the Disabled Association or RDA is a nationwide charity founded in 1969. The charity aims to enrich lives through horses. Princess Anne, herself a talented and keen rider, has been the patron since 1985. Activities include riding and carriage driving and provide fitness, therapy, skills development and opportunities for achievement. (All four of the riders in Team GB at the London 2012 and Rio 2016 paralympics started riding with RDA.) Sessions are run by volunteers and qualified coaches and activities are often planned around exercises recommended by a physio or occupational therapist.

Children and adults with physical and learning disabilities and autism are welcomed and there are no age restrictions. The charity’s network spreads throughout the UK in cities and remote rural areas aiming to bring the therapy, achievement and fun of horses to as many people as possible. It should be said, however, that there can be restrictions for riders according to size as the horses must be able to safely carry their riders.

There are several different centres within Surrey. To find your local centre check out the RDA South East region website  Find A Group – RDA South East Region  or contact Katy for advice and information.
