Explore Nature By Train – Blackwater Station

On Wednesday 4th March, some members and a few of The Coalition staff set off on the first of a planned series of relaxed countryside train trips designed to encourage exploration, creativity, and accessible travel. The journey began with the 10:42am train, travelling from Redhill through Guildford and onwards to Blackwater.

Upon arriving at Blackwater Station, the group was met by Yelabus, a community transport provider that helped make the journey more accessible by transporting participants to the nearby countryside location. From there, everyone took part in a gentle walk or wheel around the area, taking time to explore nature and learn about the different types of trees they encountered along the way. The pace of the activity was relaxed, allowing everyone to enjoy the surroundings and take in the sights and sounds of the natural environment.

After spending time outdoors, the group travelled to the local leisure centre for a creative session. Here, participants were invited to draw or sketch what they had seen, heard, felt or experienced during their walk. The arts and crafts activity offered a chance to reflect on the morning’s exploration while sharing impressions of the landscape and wildlife.

Refreshments were provided during the session, including tea, coffee and cake, creating a welcoming space for everyone to relax and chat.

Throughout the trip, the group captured photos and videos to document the journey. The aim was not only to record the enjoyable moments but also to highlight what worked well and any challenges experienced along the way. This feedback will help organisations better understand how to improve access to train travel and the countryside for everyone in the future.

The day concluded with the return journey on the 2:46pm train. As the first outing in a planned series of similar trips over the coming months, the visit to Blackwater set the tone for future adventures – combining train travel, nature, creativity, and community in a relaxed and inclusive way.
