Forest bathing taster session at Newlands Corner

Coalition and IMHN members with Coalition staff member Yasmin in the forest at Newlands Corner

Ever heard of forest bathing? If it’s conjuring up thoughts of bathing suits, then think again!

Our Coalition members and Independent Mental Health Network (IMHN) members were invited to take part in a forest bathing taster session at the very beautiful Newlands Corner.

This was arranged as part of the growing together project we are involved in with Surrey Hills. Growing Together aims to engage underrepresented communities in the Surrey Hills countryside by co-designing a programme of nature-based activities aimed at building confidence, developing skills, and improving health and wellbeing.

A group of our members visited a couple of beautiful shady spots in the woods to take part in a guided forest bathing session. Forest bathing is a mindfulness practice developed in Japan that’s gained popularity in the UK. The sessions involve being immersed in nature and using sight, smell and touch to slow down the mind and relax. Research has shown that slowing down while immersed in nature can help reduce blood pressure and stress levels.

Our group were fully immersed in the forest, with the opportunity to smell some sage and lavender, listen to the noise of nature and breath the forest air.

Following the session, we enjoyed a drink and a slice of cake – perfect way to spend a morning.

One of our IMHN members said ‘I really enjoyed the forest bathing, it’s definitely something I’m going to do again in the future’
