Megan, our Involvement Officer, shares her supercar driving experience.
Due to being registered Severely Sight Impaired (legally blind) alongside other medical conditions, I am unable to hold a driving license on medical grounds. The head injury which caused my disabilities happened when I was just 15 years old, so I never learned how to drive a car, but recently I got to drive a Ferrari!
AbleNet provide driving experiences for blind, D/deaf and disabled people using specially adapted cars and trained instructors. The Ferrari I drove was automatic and had dual controls, so that my instructor could take over at any point if necessary. He told me when to accelerate and turn, and what obstacles were up ahead. For those with reduced mobility, hand controls were also available.
This experience was bought for me by my fiancé as a birthday gift, and I think it’s one of the best gifts I’ve ever received. The feeling of driving for the very first time, in a super car, was extraordinary. I couldn’t stop smiling and laughing, I truly loved every second!
I am so glad that companies like AbleNet exist, because with the right attitude and accessibility, disabled people really can do extraordinary things!
