Sabrina here (She/Her/Hers). I am a proud disabled woman in her 30s with green hair and questionable fashion sense. Although some of my disability is life-long, I have not always identified as disabled. I have been on a very long journey around my acceptance of ‘disabled’ as an identity. Now I am a strong believer in the social model of disability and 'Nothing About Us Without Us' - I only wish I had learnt about them when I was younger! As a result, I am passionate about language, symbology*, and how the way we define ourselves and others is powerful.
I had, and continue to have, a turbulent experience with education, employment, and accessing services. These experiences have fuelled my passion for the power of lived-experience. This led me to work in jobs where co-production is a key part of the role as well as co-chairing my organisation’s disabled employee network.
I hope that in my role as trustee, I can support the younger members of our coalition to raise their voices! To be visible, proud, and loud.
*Symbology is the study or interpretation of symbols. Symbols are powerful tools at both the conscious and unconscious levels of human experience. For example, you are probably familiar with the use of symbols like a heart or smiley face and how their use can change the tone of a text message.
