November has been a busy month for Get Togethers! Our second trip of the month was a return to the ever popular Alice Holt Forest for their Thursday morning inclusive cycling session. This session runs every week (unless the rain is torrential or the forest is shut due to high winds) with a short break over Christmas. They have an amazing team of volunteers, a good selection of adapted cycles suitable for all needs and a growing group of regulars who enjoy cycling in a beautiful forest every week.
This is our fourth trip to Alice Holt and the latest in the year that we have visited but once again, the weather fairies were kind to us, and we had a lovely autumn morning to enjoy ourselves! Nine Coalition members, carers and staff arrived and greeted each other in the car park before taking the short walk and wheel to the activity centre where we chose our bikes. At Alice Holt you can choose from side-by-side tandems, hand cycles, two wheelers, three wheelers and bikes with wheelchair platforms – there’s something for everyone!
There are lots of paths to chose from at Alice Holt. Close to the activity centre there is a short figure of eight loop to get used to the bikes. Then there is a longer recommended loop going out into the forest a bit more but still on relatively flat ground. Some members were feeling adventurous so cycled a little further afield seeking out some of the models on the Gruffalo Trail!
After our cycle we had to visit the café (of course!) where we met up with two more Coalition members who wanted to enjoy the forest but chose not to cycle. Anyone is welcome to come along and participate as much as they would like! It was another enjoyable day with lots of laughter and a chance to catch up with friends or meet new people. If you’d like to give cycling a try there’s no need to wait for the next Get Together – there are lots of places around Surrey with adapted bikes. Get in touch with Katy for details!
